RAL Space is leading a consortium to produce the calibration apparatus for the spaceborne MWS instrument series. This equipment will simulate the Earth and cold space views of MWS, over the frequency range 23 - 229 GHz, when the instrument undergoes thermal vacuum chamber testing. The MMT group wishes to appoint an engineer to support production of the critical blackbody calibration targets. This work will be undertaken at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Didcot OX11 0QX, Oxfordshire.
About The Role
The RAL Space Millimetre Wave Technology (MMT) Group is seeking an experienced RF/ microwave/mm-wave test engineer to provide technical engineering support on the development of radiometer calibration apparatus for the Microwave Sounder instrument (MWS) on the MetOp Second Generation series of Earth observation satellites.
You will be expected to undertake, under supervision, the following activities:
- Design and test of the quasi-optical mm-wave reflectivity system for characterising the MWS calibration targets. This work will require specifying feedhorns, incorporation of their beams into GRASP, and performing subsequent quasi-optical system and mechanical design. You will then set up the vector network analyser with the optical components, measuring and maximising the system’s dynamic range and minimising noise and uncertainties. You will then automate measurement series and convert the data in a form suitable for automatic population of reports.
- Use HFSS and/or CST to model the return loss of calibration targets. This will involve incorporating an accurate model of the absorber, if necessary measuring the dielectric properties of the material.
- Use the VNA to measure accurately the reflectivity of our calibration targets. This will necessarily require attention to fine detail and for a series of measurements to done over a range of angles, frequencies, polarisations and temperatures.
- Writing reports, incorporating measurements, into documents and presenting results to the colleagues, project management and customers
- Identifying and recommend possible improvements in efficiency or quality at any stage of their work
About You
Suitable candidates will be educated to first degree in Physics or Electronic Engineering or a related subject. A vocational qualification e.g. HNC or equivalent, with additional experience will also be considered
You will have experience and understanding of RF/microwave/ mm-wave vector network analyser measurements.
You will have experience in computer modelling of quasi-optical components and/or systems.
You will be able to prepare and present clearly measurement results orally and in report form.
You will have excellent numerical, written and oral skills
Benefits
An excellent index linked pension scheme, 30 days leave allowance and flexi-time are offered. Full details of offered benefits can be found on STFC’s careers pages. A relocation allowance may also be available where applicable.
Applications are handled by UK SBS; to apply please visit our job board at http://www.topcareer.jobs/Vacancy/irc214277_6163.aspx . Applicants are also required to include a cover letter outlining their suitability for this role. Please also state where you saw this role advertised.
