Are you a skilled system administrator? Would you like to work in one of the most technically challenging high-performance computing environments in the UK? Does the prospect of supporting advanced technology such as IBM BlueGene/Q, Intel Xeon Phi, or large data visualisation facilities excite you?
We have an opening for two talented individuals to help support the activities of the Hartree Centre through the use of highly advanced computing and data systems.
Contacts and Communication
You will report to one of the Systems Team Leaders, High Performance Systems Group (HPSG) and your senior line manager will be the group leader of HPSG. Day to day contacts and communications will be with other HPSG members, SCD staff, and customers of the Hartree Centre.
You will be expected to provide out-of-hours on-call cover, on a rota basis. You will be expected to undergo National Security Vetting to SC level before being confirmed in this role. One of the requirements for this is that you have been living in the UK for at least five years.
About You
You will be knowledgeable about computer hardware and have the ability to diagnose system faults and analyse problems. You will have expertise in Unix/Linux and in system administration procedures and best practice (such as ITIL). You will have the ability to work in a large scale production IT environment and have excellent communication skill as well as a proven ability to work in a team. You will have strong scripting skills in bash, Perl and/or Python
It is desirable that you have expertise in managing and provisioning an HPC environment (for example: xCAT, Platform Cluster Manager, Bright Cluster Manager) as well as expertise in configuring and managing HPC workload managers (such as IBM LoadLeveler, Platform LSF). It is also desirable to have knowledge of parallel file systems, their configuration and operation – especially IBM GPFS - and expertise in operating IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for backup of customer data.
Other desirable attributes include: an understanding of computer visualisation hardware and software; an understanding of data analytics software and systems, especially IBM products (such as BigInsights, Streams, SPSS).
You will be willing and able to undertake occasional travel both within the UK and overseas.
